What Documents Do I Need To Keep On File?

July 2, 2021

Even in an increasingly digital world, there are still numerous documents that clients should retain as hard copies. Determining which documents need to be kept as hard copies versus digital copies and how long to keep them for depends on the nature of the documents. For example, tax documents generally only need to be kept for six years and can be retained digitally. Other documents like Social Security cards, birth certificates, and Driver’s licenses must be kept in their original physical forms. Wills, trusts, and Powers of Attorney also should be kept as original copies to prove their authenticity. For important documents, clients should consider keeping them in safes or safe deposit boxes.

At Brandywine Oak, we provide our clients guidance on numerous topics that extend beyond investments. To learn more about which documents to keep and for how long, please read Kitces
